Challenges for PMS Adoption in Morocco

Challenges for PMS Adoption in Morocco

In our previous article, we highlighted the importance of embracing technology as the first step toward successful accommodation management. We emphasized starting with a solid foundation: a reliable Property Management System (PMS). Think of a PMS as the brain of your operation, it simplifies managing bookings, check-ins, check-outs, and even staff schedules. By saving time, minimizing errors, and ensuring smooth operations, a good PMS sets the stage for a thriving and well-organized hospitality business.

While a PMS sounds perfect, the Moroccan market faces two major challenges:

1. Lack of Payment Gateway Integration

Most PMS providers do not offer payment gateways for Morocco. This means you cannot process online payments from Moroccan banks directly through their systems.

Some providers suggest adding this functionality at an extra cost, either a fixed fee or a commission on every transaction. This increases the overall cost significantly, making the solution less appealing for small to medium properties.

The best current solution we’ve found is using HotelRunner (a PMS/Channel Manager) combined with Payzone (a Moroccan payment gateway). However, there are limitations:

HotelRunner’s pricing tools are basic and need improvement.
It does not support seasonal pricing, which is crucial for properties adjusting rates during peak and off peak periods.

2. Limited Online Payment Options in Morocco

Online payments in Morocco are still monopolized by CMI (Centre Monétique Interbancaire). While there are alternatives like Payzone and Naps, they are still developing their services and integrations.

CMI has been known to impose strict conditions and high fees, which discourage many property owners. However, with new regulations expected in 2025, we are optimistic that the market will open up and create more competition. This should encourage PMS providers to add Moroccan payment integrations, making it easier for accommodation owners to adopt these solutions.

From our experience: CMI’s development team is advanced, offering a variety of plugins and features. Payzone’s team is more approachable and supportive, but their technology and options need improvement.

Why Morocco Needs to Keep Up?

Morocco has ambitious goals for tourism and is investing heavily in the sector. But to truly thrive, the industry must adopt modern tools like PMS systems with integrated online payments. These technologies are no longer optional they’re necessary to stay competitive.

We’re optimistic about the future. The expected changes in the payment landscape, particularly the increased independence of players like Payzone and Naps, could bring the innovation we need. As property owners, hoteliers, or managers, we must be ready to embrace these tools and adapt quickly to keep pace with global standards.

Together, let’s build a stronger, more connected tourism industry in Morocco!
